On May 18, we celebrated some of our longest tenured employees, as well as retirees and district superlatives. Congratulations to Melissa Pavlowich of Lomax Elementary School and Jaime Arizpe of La Porte High School, who are the 2021-22 Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year, respectively. Gerius Roman, a math teacher at James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus, also deserves kudos for being named La Porte ISD's Rookie of the Year. Finally, Carlin Grammer and Donna Spaugh were selected as the district's secondary  and elementary principals of the year by our district administration, and they are quite deserving of the honor!

New Principals

Lisa Basile                                                                            Jose Lozano                                                     Jesse Loudermilk                                                       Blake Minor

Four La Porte ISD campuses will have new faces in the principal's office for 2021-22. Lisa Basile will take over at Bayshore Elementary for Donna Spaugh, who is retiring. Lisa has spent her entire 24-year career in La Porte ISD, most recently as an assistant principal at Jennie Reid Elementary. Jose Lozano will succeed Deanna Narcisse at Leo A. Rizzuto Elementary; Deanna is also retiring.  Jose's 14 years in education have all occurred in La Porte ISD. He will not have to change his morning commute when he takes on the new role, as Jose has most recently served as the assistant principal at Rizzuto. Jesse Loudermilk will be the next principal at the La Porte ISD Academy of Viola DeWalt High School. He will take the reins from Candace Pohl, who is moving out of the area. Jesse has been an educator for 17 years, 14 of which he has spent in La Porte ISD. His most recent role has been assistant principal at La Porte High School. Blake Minor will take the helm at La Porte Jr. High School. Minor is assistant principal of James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus. He previously served as assistant principal, math teacher and (several years ago) as a student teacher at Lomax Junior High School.

Julie Abram

I am also pleased to welcome Julie Abram to La Porte ISD as our executive director of teaching and professional learning. This is a new position from which Julie will provide leadership and supervision in curriculum and instructional development, revision, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of the district’s curriculum. Her charge also includes oversight of the district’s professional learning.  She has served as an instructional leader, district and campus administrator and classroom teacher for more than 29 years.

Jackson Tarr

Our newest addition to the Bulldog Family is Jackson Tarr, our new head football coach and athletic coordinator. Jackson comes to La Porte from Crosby ISD, where he was the defensive coordinator for the 2020 Region 3 Champions and 5A-II State Finalists. Prior to that, he held several positions, including assistant head coach, at Fort Bend Hightower. Coach Tarr has served as an educator and coach for 20 years.

Please join me in congratulating all of our new administrators for the 2021-22 school year!

Meanwhile, in Ali Carrizal's prekindergarten classroom at La Porte Elementary School....

Commencement exercises for The Academy at Viola DeWalt High School are scheduled for May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Bulldog Centre. La Porte High School commencement is May 28 at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.

As a superintendent and former high school principal, I have attended my fair share of commencement ceremonies, and it never fails that I get goosebumps seeing graduates walk across the stage. Congratulations to the more than 520 La Porte ISD graduates from our two high schools. I know that the Class of 2021 is ready to change the world!
