Middle School Summer STEM Workshops

La Porte ISD is excited to announce that we have once again partnered with the Galveston Bay Foundation to offer our middle students the opportunity to relate what they are learning in their science classes to real world phenomenon. They will engage in hands-on STEM activities exploring a variety of different ecosystems found in La Porte’s backyard, and learn how to become future stewards of our Bay. All workshops will be held at La Porte Jr. High School

Animal Adaptations
Students will investigate the organisms that live in Galveston Bay by identifying the habitats and ranges of animals seen in the bay, observing bay animal specimens to determine physical and behavioral adaptations, creating bay food webs, and discussing environmental and human impacts on those food webs.

Date: June 2    Time: 9:00am – 11:00am

Watersheds and Wetlands
Students will discover the wonders of wetlands by exploring a map of Galveston Bay, discovering the characteristics and types of wetlands in our region, identifying the functions of marsh wetlands, and completing a dissection of smooth cordgrass – the primary plant in our local marshes.

Date: June 9    Time: 9:00am – 11:00am

All About Oysters
Students will learn the biology and ecology of Galveston Bay oysters during this session by mapping oyster reef locations based on environmental factors in the bay, identifying the functions of oyster reefs, completing a dissection of an oyster, and discussing the environmental and human impacts on local oyster reef habitats.

Date: June 16    Time: 9:00am – 11:00am

Shoreline Engineering
students will investigate erosion, habitat restoration, coastal resiliency, and engineering principles in this hands-on lab experience where they get to imagine they are conservation engineers in Galveston Bay.

Date: June 22    Time: 9:00am – 11:00am
