Five La Porte High School DECA students have qualified for the state meet after winning their respective district competitions on Jan. 15 at Ridge Point High School. 

In marketing events, Isai Linares won in retail merchandising, and Ava Espinosa won in professional selling. Aiza Garcia and Christian Landin-Ruiz in the finance event, won in accounting applications and accounting, respectively. Sean Gonzales took top honors in the individual entrepreneurship series.  

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe, according to the organization's website. Texas DECA includes more than 15,000 members. 

“I am very proud of this group and the hard work they put in,” said Chad Pruitt, DECA sponsor and La Porte High School marketing teacher. 

The state DECA competition is scheduled for Feb. 24-26 in Houston. Students who advance at state are qualified to compete at the International Career Development Conference in April.
