The scene at Heritage Elementary School on January 25 was reminiscent of any other normal day – hundreds of students, dozens of teachers and full parking lots ... Except January 25 was a Saturday.

Almost 300 students – 291 to be exact – spent January 25 at Heritage to compete in the District Academic UIL meet. By the time it was over, just as many parents had arrived for the awards ceremony, during which every student received recognition.

Though the event took place over the course of hours, it took months of preparation and about 45 staff members to bring it to fruition … and that does not count the work put in by the students and their academic coaches.

“UIL coaches recruit students who are interested in participating in the events, and they hold practices after school to prepare,” said Jewel Whitfield, La Porte ISD’s executive director of elementary education. “The students also work at home to prepare their skills.”

When all was said and done, students received a certificate for their efforts. The top six competitors in each event also received medals.
