La Porte High School golfer Nicholas Canales has known for some time what it feels like to be the young man of the hour. On July 26, he experienced being the young man of the day.
For Canales’ many successes on golf courses across Texas and the nation during the past year, La Porte Mayor Louis Rigby proclaimed July 26, 2021, as Nicholas Canales Day in the city.
Canales, in April, became the first La Porte High School golfer since 1983 to qualify for the UIL state tournament, where he finished eighth among a field of more than 70 golfers.
This summer he placed sixth in the First Tee National Championship at Clemson University; Canales then shot a five-under-par (and won) his first American Junior Golf Association tournament held in St. Louis.
In September he will partner with a PGA professional for the Pure Insurance Tournament at Pebble Beach.
