Julie Spears, an English Language Arts teacher at La Porte Elementary School, and Gary So, Technology Applications teacher and coach at La Porte Jr. High School were named the 2024-25 District Teachers of the Year at the May 16 La Porte ISD Service Awards celebration at Bulldog Centre. 

Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson announced their selection following the recognition of all La Porte ISD Campus Teachers of the Year. The Rotary Club of La Porte presented each of the District Teachers of the Year with a check for $6,000. 

Prior to the announcement of the district Teachers of the Year, principals escorted their respective campus Teachers of the Year to the stage as brief bios on each were read. 

Other elementary honorees and their respective schools are: 

Kimberley Weekley, Bayshore Elementary 
Elizabeth Owens, College Park Elementary 
Amber Kornegay, Heritage Elementary 
Ashley Wiltz, Lomax Elementary 
Michele Nance, Jennie Reid Elementary 
Mona Gibbs, Leo A. Rizzuto Elementary 

Other secondary honorees are:  

Candace Stakes, James H. Baker Sixth Grade 
Gloria Soloman, Secondary DAEP 
Laurie Burns, Lomax Jr. High 
Gerald Grauman, Academy of Viola DeWalt 
Tara Ybarra, La Porte High School (core subjects) 
Andrea Angelo, La Porte High School (non-core areas) 

Farzana Mohammed, a kindergarten teacher at Lomax Elementary School was announced as the district’s Rookie Teacher of the Year. Karen Lawley, La Porte Elementary principal, and Lucio Rodriguez, James H. Baker principal, were honored as elementary and secondary Principal of the Year, respectively. 

With their selection as district superlatives, Spears and So will advance to the Region 4 Teacher of the Year competition.
