Lucio Rodriguez and Karen Lawley have been named as the 2024 La Porte ISD Principals of the Year for secondary and elementary, respectively. 

Rodriguez is the principal of James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus; Lawley is the principal at La Porte Elementary School. District administrators select honorees based on several criteria, including a multitude of attributes that contribute to staff and student success.   

“The dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence (from Mrs. Lawley and Mr. Rodriguez) have made a profound impact on their schools,” said La Porte ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Walter Jackson. “Their passion for education and relentless pursuit of student success truly set the standard for exemplary leadership.” 

Lucio Rodriguez  
Mr. Lucio Rodriguez became the principal of the James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus in 2022. He previously worked in Houston ISD as the assistant principal of Navarro Middle School. Before this role, he was principal, assistant principal, curriculum writer, science department head and math lead teacher at Houston Gateway Academy Charter School. Mr. Rodriguez earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Houston and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Lamar University.  

Karen Lawley  
Mrs. Karen Lawley has been principal at La Porte Elementary since 2022, before which she was an assistant principal there for four years. Prior to her assistant principal role, she supported students in La Porte ISD as a special education teacher at La Porte Elementary and as a general education teacher at Bayshore Elementary.  Lawley holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Houston – Clear Lake, a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Lamar University, and an additional Master of Education degree in Special Education from the University of St. Thomas.
