Anthony Sommer, who recently earned an AP Scholar with Distinction award, can now add National Merit Semifinalist to his list of academic accolades.
The National Merit Scholarship Program announced Sommer as among 16,000 students across the U.S. who now qualify to vie for a piece of the $31 million in college scholarships offered in the spring.
“We are extremely proud of Anthony for being recognized as one of the top scholars in the state and nation,” said La Porte High School Principal Carlin Grammer. “This is an honor that only a small percentage of students ever achieve.”
Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition; about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the National Merit title.
“Anthony is in the application process to become a National Merit Scholar Finalist, and we are excited about his chances,” Grammer said.
