The La Porte High School Golf Team made history on April 19. Nicholas Canales also rewrote a record book of his own.
Canales, who is committed to playing golf next year at the University of Nebraska, became the first golfer in La Porte High School history to qualify for the UIL State Tournament for two consecutive years. His Bulldogs team, meanwhile, became the school’s first ever to qualify for three straight UIL Regional Tournaments.
Just as in the 2021 Regional Tournament, the team finished ninth overall; Canales likewise shot well enough for a third-place finish and a ticket to Georgetown, where the State Tournament will be held May 9-10 at White Wing Golf Club.
“The team made a valiant effort on the second day of competition to finish ninth,” said Head Coach Chad Forbus. “That’s really good considering that they were sitting in thirteenth place at the end of day one.”
Canales, at the 2021 State Tournament, carded a two-round total of 147, which earned him a fifth-place finish.
