La Porte ISD alumna Melissa Crutcher will serve as an interim school board member following unanimous approval of the appointment Monday by the La Porte ISD Board of Trustees.

She will fill the vacant Position 6 seat, which was held by Charlcya Wheeler, who stepped down in September due to health reasons.

Melissa Crutcher named as interim trustee to Position 6.

The Board interviewed six candidates for the seat. Crutcher will serve in the position on an interim basis until the May 2022 elections. She will be sworn in at the Board’s Nov. 2 regular meeting.

“Melissa Crutcher has been very active in our schools and community, and her experience and volunteer work will be a major asset to our team,” said Board President David Janda. “We welcome her to the Board, and we are confident she will be a valuable advocate on behalf of our students, families, staff and community members.”

Crutcher is currently the board secretary and marketing manager at Texas Stress. She also volunteers with several organizations, including Rotary, La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce and the Rizzuto Elementary PTO, where she serves as treasurer.

“I apply Abraham Lincoln’s quote ‘Whatever you are, be a good one’ to everything I commit to, and I am committed to helping La Porte ISD succeed,” Crutcher said.

Crutcher is a 1999 La Porte High School graduate. She and her husband Talon have three children; Kyler is a high school junior, Layla is in third grade at Rizzuto, and Molly is in the PreK program at the district’s Early Childhood Center.

“We are very happy to welcome Melissa to the Board of Trustees, and we look forward to working with her as we continue to make great things happen in La Porte ISD,” Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson said.
