Federal free meal waivers expired for all U.S. schools on June 30

The free meals provided to public school students for the past couple of years were a result of federal waivers, which expired for all U.S. schools on June 30. Essentially, the waivers provided meals at no cost to students, and school districts were reimbursed by the USDA. Efforts in U.S. Congress to continue the program through 2022-23 have failed. As a result, many school districts have been forced to return to regular meal rates. Fortunately, meal prices in La Porte ISD have remained the same for several years, and we will not be increasing prices this year. We invite everyone to apply for the USDA’s free and reduced-price meal program.
