La Porte ISD awarded federal school safety grant

La Porte and Lovejoy, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, are the only two Texas school districts to receive the grant.

The bureau awarded the Texas Education Agency $2 million total, with $1 million earmarked for preventing school violence statewide.

The grant is an extension of the Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act of 2018, and will be used to train school personnel and educate students, according to Dr. Vonn Murray, La Porte’s executive director of state and federal programs.

It additionally provides for the development and operation of anonymous reporting systems for threats of school violence, including mobile telephone applications, hotlines and websites, he said.

La Porte ISD had already implemented a comprehensive safety and security initiative prior to the grant application.  The Community Safety Institute, a nationally recognized school safety consulting organization, further assured the bureau that the district’s existing interventions are effective and incorporated into a broader school safety planning and assessment effort.
