La Porte H.S. Interact Club earns Presidential Citation

Fewer than 4 percent of the Interact Clubs internationally qualify for this award.  In the Houston area, LPHS is one of 34 clubs that achieved all requirements in community and international service.

LPHS Interact Club president Waleed Chatta, a senior, accepted the award on behalf of the club. This is the second year that the club has earned this distinction.

According to Tiffiny Vaughn, LPHS teacher and Interact sponsor, the club completed several goals to meet the requirements for the award.  Three Interactors attended the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awakening) camp, while two others served as RYLA counselors.  The club also sponsored San Jacinto College Mentoring Day at the first Interact meeting, with Van Wigginton, 2017-18 president of the Rotary Club of La Porte and San Jacinto College provost, presenting college information to the membership.

The Interact Club also participated in the Purple Pinky project to raise funds for Polio Plus, the Rotary Club’s effort to eradicate polio, as well as three other fundraisers for the Rotary Club of La Porte. Atfundraisersarch for LaFitte’s Gold sponsored by the City of La Porte, Interactors promoted awareness of End Polio Now, raising funds and educating community members about the project.

During the month of November, the group participated in multiple service projects, including Global Youth Service Week.

At the Interact District Conference this spring, the Interact Club earned “Service Project of the Year” for their revitalization of the LPHS Memorial Garden, a project that was completed over several weekends. The Interact Club involved several other organizations in one phase of the project and continues to maintain the garden after school and on weekends.
