UIL judges awarded the band a Sweepstakes honor – with straight Division One ratings – during the October 21 competition at Channelview ISD Stadium. This is the highest rating that can be achieved for marching band in the state of Texas.
“Given the incredible challenge of losing almost two weeks of rehearsal and practice time due to Hurricane Harvey, I couldn’t be prouder of our kids being able to come together to prepare the way they did for the past six weeks leading up to this performance,” said Matt Burke, La Porte ISD’s director of performing and visual arts. “I’m especially proud of our new Head Band Director Richard Lewis and the high school band staff for their leadership and guiding the band through such a challenging time and coming out on top.”
Lewis is assisted by Mark Fennell and Julia Tatum.
