Bulldog bands earn UIL Sweepstakes honors

The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble earned unanimous ‘one’ ratings from judges at the 2017 UIL Concert & Site-Reading Contest in late-April.  The high marks not only resulted in the bands’ first division ratings, but also ensured the Sweepstakes, which is awarded when bands receive top honors in all areas of a contest.

For the Wind Ensemble, the Sweepstakes is its second in three years; the Symphonic Band’s Sweepstakes is its second in a row.

The La Porte High School Band program also earns a Sweepstakes for the 2016-17 school year because it also received first division ratings in marching contest, during the fall.

Additional band honors

The La Porte High School Concert Band, in only its 4th year of existence, earned the highest UIL Concert & Sight-Reading ratings in its brief history, with unanimous first division (concert) honors, along with one first division and two ‘excellent’ ratings in sight-reading.

In the junior high division, both Lomax and La Porte Junior High schools earned First Division ratings on stage and Sweepstakes honors. This marks the first time in school history that every district band has earned a First Division in concert ratings.

The high school bands are directed by Mark Nichols, Lisa Tatum and Mark Fennell. Kevin Poe and Stephanie Boothman direct the Lomax and La Porte Junior High bands, respectively.
