The La Porte High School Mighty Bulldog Band finished 18th at the University Interscholastic League Area Marching Contest on October 29, its highest finish at the biannual event in 27 years.
"My heart is full of pride and joy," Director Mark Nichols said. "The students rehearsed harder than I have ever seen and we represented La Porte at the highest level."
The band garnered 34th place at the same contest in 2014, he said. But just getting to the Area round is an accomplishment in itself, as the band qualified by earning a first division rating at the Regional marching contest.
In the weeks leading to the UIL competitions, judges named the band Grand Champion in the Channelview Marching Contest. They additionally awarded La Porte musicians with Best Woodwinds, Best Brass and Best Percussion honors at the (Channelview) meet.
The band also made history in the Galena Park Marching Contest, placing seventh out of 30 bands, with an 812 average judges’ score – its highest average ever at the event, Nichols said.
"The thing I was the most proud of was the outpouring of support we got all day Saturday," Nichols said. "Parents held signs and rooted us on as we traveled down Fairmont. The huge cheers from the stands gave the students life in their performance. No other school had that kind of love and it helped us perform our best."
