Kindergarten News
By: Hannah Hyde and Nick Escontrias
Jennie Reid kindergartners have done some splendid work in the Integration Lab. We went to their classes to ask them some questions about what kind of projects they did. Mrs. Hyde said, "Each kid made a slide on what they were thankful for and I put it together to make a class slide show on Kid Pix." we asked the students what they were thankful for and this is what they had to say, Shelby Ballard said, "I am thankful for God because he makes everything." Andre Ford said, "I am thankful for my family and my cousins because they love me." We also asked them what they liked best about working in the lab. Most of them replied, "Working and drawing on Kid Pix is what we liked best."
Mrs. Rohr's, Mrs. Sepulveda's and Mrs. Garrett's classes all did the same project called the Five Senses of Christmas. We asked them if they liked teaching in the lab and why. They responded, "Absolutely, we loved teaching in the lab!" Mrs. Batson had a great project, and it went with what we were doing in the classroom." We also asked the kids a few questions. Devi said, "My favorite sense is taste and I like to taste apples." Kristi said, "My favorite sense is see, I like to see my friends." Brandon said, "I like to hear bells." Zeke said, "My favorite sense is taste, I like to taste cookies." As you can see, kindergarten kids had a great time and worked very hard. Tune in next month to see what new and exciting projects they create in the Integration Lab.

Busy, Busy 5th Graders
By: Kolten Dunkerson
Here at Jennie Reid, our 5th Grade classes have been working hard in Mrs. Batson's Integration Lab. Mrs. Oian's Science classes did a project using Kidspiration, a new software program we have. They compared two of the Earth's biomes. Wilson Priest said, "It was easy. You have to go to the computer and look for pictures of animals. Then you have to put them onto the correct part of the comparison chart." Hayden Roachel said, "It was kind of easy. I compared the desert and the aquatic biomes. I compared their soil, plants, animals and moisture." Mrs. Oian said, "I thought they did an outstanding job for their first projects. their work was creative and they have learned how to create a web to share information with others." Mrs. Miller's class compared Texas Indian tribes with Native American tribes using Kidspiration software. Mrs. Miller said that she thinks it's great that every student has an opportunity to use technology. Mrs. Zimmerman's and Mrs. Still's class said, "It was kind of fun, but kind of hard. You had to put numbers like that were multiples of three, prime numbers and even numbers onto the proper spot on the Venn diagram." Our 5th graders have loved the projects so far and we hope they like the rest of the projects in store for them here at the Integration Lab.
1st Grade Gets Down to Business
By: Shana Stein and Chris Carter
For the first part of the year first graders have been going down to Mrs. Batson's lab to do different projects. many first graders enjoyed working with Mrs. Batson. Here are some of the things that they did. Mrs. Troxell's first grade class enjoyed making the Indian slide show on Kid Pix. Ms. Sim's class had so much fun making cookie graphs using Graphers. This was some of the students first time to use Graphers, but they did a good job. Mrs. Basil's class did a "I am thankful for" project using Kid Pix. They thought this was the best project ever. Mrs. Gifford's class worked on pie graphs using the Graphers program. This was hard for them but it was still fun. Some of these kids wanted to tell us something about mrs. Batson's lab. Shelby Walkins from Mrs. Troxell's class said, "I love working on Kid Pix!" Jerald Wolf, from Mrs. Gifford's class said, "We should work in Graphers more." Britney Smith from Mrs. Basil's class said, "Slide shows are fun in Kid Pix!" Alyssa Taylor from Ms. Sims' class said, "We have more educational programs!" All of the software that the students use at Jennie Reid was provided by the people who work for LPISD. We hope you enjoyed hearing about first grade!

Fourth Grade Projects
By: Taylor McElroy and Tyler Morris
The Fourth Grade students have done many projects using Kidspiration, Graphers, and the Internet. Ms. Quested's and Ms. McCrea's classes have been to the Integration Lab working on a water cycle project. Ms. Glover's and Ms. Ashby's classes have gone to the Integration Lab and have worked on M&M graphs. Dylan Duck from Ms. Glover's class and Lindsay Starnes from Ms. Ashby's class both agreed that the M&M project was fun and easy. Some of the other students that we interviewed said that they enjoyed it, especially when they go to eat the M&M's. Mrs. Ashby's and Ms. Glover's classes are currently working on a Texas Revolution project. Details of this project and the student's reactions will be in our next issue.
Life Skills
By Hannah Hyde and Taylor McElroy
The Life Skills class went into the Integration Lab and worked with money. In the lab they showed a way of adding money by; 1penny + 1penny + 1penny + 1penny + 1penny = 1nickle. Ms. Santarelli said "Our theme for those two weeks was money. We were working with money with money exchange, spelling money names, and learning that some coins put together equal a dollar, and some coins put together equal other coins." We asked some of the kids how they liked it and here are some of their answers: Daniel said, "I had a great time and enjoyed being there." Greg said, "Computers are cool and fun." Sabrina said, "It was fun." Shiloh said, "I liked to type." We are happy to see kids learning and having fun at the same time. I'm sure they will be back soon, stay tuned for further data.
3rd Graders Hard at Work
By: Bethany Garza and Ryan Miller
The 3rd graders here at Jennie Reid have been busy working in the Integration Lab. Mrs. Wilson's math class did a sports graph on Graphers. We asked "What did you like most about working in the lab?" Ashley said, "I like it because it takes less time than drawing and we have more choices when we work on the computer." The teachers like it just as much as the kids. Mrs. Wilson said, "I like it because it exposes students to technology and it allows them to be creative. Once they grasp the concept, they can work much quicker, and they think it's a fun way of learning." Mrs. O'Brien's math classes also worked on Graphers. They did graphs on the different types of Halloween treats they received while they were trick-or-treating. They also wrote questions about the information found on their graphs. Kailani and Sarah said they did tally tables, bar graphs and pictographs. We asked Mrs. O'Brien "How do you think working in the lab benefits for your class?" She said, "It gives them the opportunity to work the technology. We also took an experience that sorted and graphed and got a result of what was collected." Mrs. Keul's Social Studies classes, Mrs. Raley's Social Studies classes, and Mrs. Muston's class worked on the La Porte History and Fact Treasure Hunt. We asked Mrs. Keul's class, "What do you like most about living in La Porte?" Here's what some of the kids said: Jasmine said, "Because of all the people." Aaliyah said, "Because it has most of my friends and lots of schools." Mrs. Raley's classes liked it just as much as Mrs. Keul's class. We asked them, "Do you like working with the computers better than pencil and paper?" Miguel said, "Yes, I like working on the computer better than writing on paper." Haley said, "I like the computer better because we get to use the Internet and I don't get blisters from using a pencil." MRs. Raley like it because, "It helps students learn a lot of facts about La Porte, the place they live in. It also helps them learn computer skills as well as gaining knowledge about the city in which they live." Mrs. Muston's class liked it even more, We asked her student's, "Did you like working on the La Porte History and Fact Treasure Hunt? Why?" Noelie said, "Yes, because you get to use the Internet and learn different things." And Joshua said, "Yes, because we got to look up stuff. I like it better than using pencil and paper." We asked Mrs. Muston's, "How do you think working in the lab benefits your class?" She said, "It gives my students the chance to use the Internet and it gives them practice to punch the different keys." We know that you have guessed by now that the 3rd graders here at JRE have been working hard in the Integration Lab. Their projects have been awesome and we're looking forward to seeing much more!
Interviewing Second Grade
By: Saige Crowder and Cody Williams
We started our interview by asking the teachers some questions. Our first teacher to interview was Miss Shipp. We asked her the question, "Did you 1st and 2nd graders do the same project in Mrs. Batson's lab?" She said they did. Taz, from Miss Shipp's class, liked the project where he went around asking people about pies. "I like pumpkin pie" he said. After asking people what kind of pie was their favorite, they put this information into a bar graph using the Graphers program. We asked both Mrs. Weaver and Mrs. Holloway how many times they had brought their classes to Mrs. Batson's lab. Mrs. Weaver told us her class had been to the lab several times. One of the projects her students did was to show all of the different ways to make a dollar. They used the Kidspiration program to accomplish this task. They also did some great projects on Famous African Americans. Lyndzie, from Mrs. Weaver's class said that she had fun doing a project on Sojourner Truth. Mrs. Holloway told us that her students had also done several projects. Her class made books in the Integration Lab. They used Kid Works to create their books. Their books were about some of their family's Christmas Traditions. They also did a math activity using Kidspiration. The activity was called 'Time to Pay the Bill'. They were given several items to purchase and had to show the correct coin combination needed to complete each purchase. mrs. Mill's class got to use the Graphers program. They went to the lab and talked about their favorite sports. They used tally marks to record their answers. They then created Bar graphs to show the results of the survey. Caleb, from Mrs. Tutt's class, liked doing a graph on fruit juice. Her class used the Graphers program to show favorite fruit juice. They made Pictographs, Bar graphs and Circle graphs. they even got to create a table that showed not only the number of people that liked the fruit juice, but they showed the results as a fraction and decimal. Wow! Can you believe they are only in second grade? We look forward to seeing what else the second graders do in the Integration Lab.
