The City of La Porte Emergency Medical Services and its partners have teamed up to help immunize children in La Porte and surrounding areas. The FREE immunization clinics are held from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon on the second Saturday of each month at the City of La Porte Fire Station #2 (across from the La Porte Municipal Airport). Linda DeLeon and Scottie Anderson's "After Hours Art Program" receive awards from DuPont Federal Credit Union ...
DuPont Award - Ms. Anderson Kathleen “Scottie” Anderson
– 5th grade art teacher at Bayshore Elementary and her “After Hours Art Program” students (grades 3 thru 5) designed a very creative 3-D mural to promote the “Win a Bike” drawing. The kids liked it so much they entered it in the DuPont Credit Union's Arts Program contest! It is currently on display in their lobby for all to enjoy! To show their appreciation, the credit union made a donation to the program and rewarded the kids with Dairy Queen gift certificates to kick-off their summer vacation.DuPont Award - Ms. DeLeon

 

Linda DeLeon, cafeteria manager at Lomax Junior High – was the winner of $100 in DuPont Credit Union's recent LPISD payroll drawing. Great way to end the school year! The “Lobo” behind her in the photo is a puzzle she and the other Lomax cafeteria workers made to show their “Lobo Spirit!!”

2004 - 2005 Grant Recipients Announced!On April 8th the La Porte Education Foundation Prize Patrol made it's annual rounds, delivering balloons, excitement and checks to classrooms across the district! The La Porte Education Foundation developed the Grant Program to encourage teachers to develop innovative programs which stimulate thought, expand the existing curriculum and advance new approaches in teaching in the La Porte Independent School District. Sixty-two grants were awarded this year totaling a record $60,171.26!! Congratulations to all of the 2004 - 2005 Grant Recipients!

UIL Academic Winners!
On March 26 and 27, thirty-four La Porte High School students competed in nineteen different contests at the UIL District 23-5A Academic Spring Meet at Pearland High School. Here are the results:

Victoria Griffis (senior) won 4th place in Accounting; Katlyn Jennings (junior) won
1st place in Literary Criticism; Larry Martinez (senior) won 3rd place in Computer Applications; Niki Major (junior) won 2nd place in Headline Writing, 3rd place in Prose Interpretation, 4th place in Persuasive Speaking, and 5th place in Feature Writing; Miranda Scarborough (sophomore) won 4th place in News Writing and 6th place in Feature Writing.

Our Science team, consisting of Jack Sykes (senior) and Karl Van Matre (junior) took a 6th place win. A very nice showing for them, considering there were nine schools in the competition and we had the only two-man team. All of the other schools that competed had full competitor rosters.

Special recognition should go to sophomore Michael Durrett: in his first debate competition ever, Michael advanced to the finals in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Congratulations to their coaches, too: Susan Roberts, Journalism; Becky Jewkes, Speech and Debate; Sharion Parker, Computer Applications; Kelly Cyr, Literary Criticism; Joel Fagan, Accounting; and Howard Schaeffer, Science.

Katlyn, Niki, Miranda, and Larry will be competing on April 23-24 at the UIL Regional Academic Spring Meet at Taylor High School in Alief. Good Luck, Bulldogs!

"Bone Appetit" is Here!
The La Porte Education Foundation Cookbook, "Bone Appetit - Cooking in Bulldog Country" is here! Don't miss this fun cookbook full of great recipes!! The cookbook is available for $20 each at the Communications office or from any Foundation Director. The proceeds benefit the La Porte Education Foundation's support of students and teachers in the La Porte Independent School District. Checks can be made payable to "La Porte ISD". The LPISD Communications staff can be reached at 281-604-7001.

Kindergarten Registration is Underway!
LPISD Elementary Schools are currently registering kindergarten students for the 2004-2005 school year. Registration continues this week through April 16th. Contact the Elementary school that your child will attend regarding specific registration information and activities. The following links have been provided for your convenience.

Chatos Win at Nationals!
La Porte High School Chatos Dance Team took the Overall Large Team National Champions Award recently at Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston at the Showtime International Dance Competition. They competed against 78 teams for this coveted distinction. Also taking first place overall with their jazz routines were the Chatos Dance Officers and Jazz Company. Congratulations to all for an outstanding achievement!

Third Times' A Charm for Spelling Bee Champ!
For the third consecutive year La Porte Junior High eight grader, Ross Griffey is the
La Porte ISD Spelling Bee Champion! For the win Ross had to correctly spell "tinselry" (pretentious ornamentation) and "reprisal" (act of retaliation). First runner-up was Matt Ehlers a seventh grader at Lomax Junior High. Congratulations to Ross and Matt for a job well done!

LPHS Robotics Team Receives Donation!
The LPHS Robotics Team, better known as the "Robo Dawgs" recently received a $5,000 donation from Millennium Chemical, Inc. Millennium Site Director, Dave Stephen and Millennium Manager of Power Instrumentation, Steve Straub presented the check to Career Education teacher John Davis and members of the Robotics Team during a recently visit to the campus.

This generous donation will be used to enhance the education of the team and in the building of this year's robot entry for competition. Students are working hard in preparation for the upcoming F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition on April 1, 2004 to be held at Reliant Stadium. This is an annual event for the LPHS team and the Robo Dawgs have enjoyed success in past years in this competition. We wish them all best and many thanks to Millennium Chemical, Inc. for supporting education enhancement in La Porte ISD!

Coach Lundin Received Honors!
La Porte ISD's Athletic Director, Carroll Lundin was inducted into the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association Hall of Honor on Saturday, February 7, 2004. Lundin came to La Porte in 1974 as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. Under the leadership of Coach Lundin La Porte has won eight district championships or state playoff berths. Congratulations to Coach Lundin!

High School Scholars Recognized
For their outstanding achievements, four La Porte High School Scholars were recognized during the School Board meeting on January 13, 2004 . Recognized were Larry Martinez, James Wheat, Aaron Kimball and Loretta Rios. Larry Martinez is a National Hispanic Program Scholar and is president and founder of H.O.P.E. (High School's Outreach to People Everywhere), president of National Honor Society, plays varsity golf, is captain of the Academic Challenge Team, participates in PAL's, and is the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Boy. James Wheat is a National Merit Commended Scholar. He is a member of R.O.T.C., Model UN, and the National Honor Society. Aaron Kimball is a National Merit Commended Scholar and a member of band, choir and orchestra, the National Honor Society and the musical. Loretta Rios is a National Hispanic Program Scholar and a member of band, choir, orchestra, National Honor Society, musical, and the Academic Challenge team. Congratulations to all of you for your outstanding achievements and leadership!

Promotion Policy Changed
In the pursuit of academic excellence La Porte Independent School Board approved an amendment to its Academic Achievement: Retention and Promotion Policy for grades 1- 8, during the December board meeting. Students will now have to achieve a grade of 70% or above in all four of their core academic courses: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Previously students were required to achieve a grade of 70% in only three of the four core courses to be eligible for promotion. This change was instituted in efforts to raise the bar of academic achievement and align local district standards with those on the state level.

La Porte Remains In District 23-5A
It has been announced that La Porte High School will remain in District 23-5A for two more years as the University Interscholastic League (UIL) redraws all the districts statewide, every two years.

The composition of District 23-5A has changed. Pearland will be moving out of District 23-5A at the end of this school year and into District 24-5A. Pasadena Memorial, a new school, will be joining the ranks in District 23-5A.

This will mark the first time in years, that La Porte will not be the smallest school , in terms of student enrollment, in District 23-5A. The schools in District 23-5A will fall into the following order according to student enrollment numbers:

La Porte High School athletic director, Carroll Lundin and head football coach T.J. Mills are excited about the changes.

Winners Advance to Area Competition
The top three winners from La Porte High Schools Economics Speech Contest will advance to the area competition at Clear Lake High School in February. This contest was the first of its kind to be held by La Porte High School . It was such a success that it is now being planned as an annual event. Judges for the contest were LPHS teacher Dave Turnquist and Colleen Hicks from the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce. The students received plaques for their outstanding achievement.

La Porte High School Honor Society
The La Porte High School National Honor Society recently held induction ceremonies. The inductions served to welcome new members, as well as honor those who are in their final year of National Honor Society activities.

Orienteering Team Brings Home Honors!
The La Porte High School Orienteering Team brought home their fourth straight victory recently from Regional Competition, held at Bastrop State Park. Under the direction of ROTC Commander Major Larry Vidinha, the Orienteering Team once again were successful in retaining the Southwestern USA Regional Orienteering Championship title.

A total of 44 students represented La Porte High School at the competition that drew over 400 students from across the state. More than a dozen LPHS students brought home medals from the event. The team will now concentrate on preparing for the Team Texas Scoreo competition to be held Jan. 31 in the Woodlands and then the National Championships to be held in April in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Foundation Receives Check
Lyondell and Equistar recently donated a check for $7,500 to the La Porte Education Foundation. On hand to receive the generous donation was LPISD Superintendent Dr. Molly Helmlinger, LPISD Executive Director of Communications and Foundation board member Beth Rickert, LPISD Trustee and Foundation board member Bill Baker and Lyondell/Equistar representative Charles Schneider, who is also a Foundation board member. Pictured in the background are LPISD Executive Director of Technology Services Mark Gabehart and LPISD Trustee Dr. Charles Hilborn. The La Porte Education Foundation enhances education through funding innovative, creative instructional projects for students and teachers in La Porte Schools.

Investing In The Future
LPISD Superintendent Dr. Molly Helmlinger presented a $500 check to La Porte High School Principal, David Drake, for the school's scholarship fund. Dr. Helmlinger won the check as a door prize at the Gulf Coast Area Association of School Boards meeting. Dr. Helmlinger was guest speaker with her board training in "Embracing The Rollercoaster Ride of Leadership: A Guide To Team Building."
