Quality matters. Accomplished teachers directly affect student achievement. Recognizing and rewarding accomplished teachers is a powerful way to improve education.

That's why the La Porte Independent School District has launched an initiative to encourage and support its teachers in their efforts to earn certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The NBPTS is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and non-governmental organization that has defined a rigorous set of standards, developed a process for achieving these standards and created a system to assess and certify teachers who meet them.

About NBPTS

RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE IN THE CLASSROOM

"The NBPTS has defined the only consistent, nationwide process for identifying teachers who meet high standards in more than 30 teaching fields."

The NBPTS is dedicated to advancing the quality of teaching and learning. They are working to integrate National Board Certification into American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers.

To earn certification, teachers must assemble a school-site portfolio and then participate in the NBPTS Assessment Center , an evaluation of content knowledge.

The school-site portfolio requires four entries:

The Assessment Center focuses on content knowledge as well as age-appropriate and content-appropriate strategies teachers use to teach the subject matter. Candidates spend three hours responding to six prompts, with 30 minutes to respond to each.

Throughout the process, you will be evaluated by certified teachers who are currently teaching in your discipline
