TAKS Information for Parents of Biology Students:
Students of today face many more challenges and obstacles during their young lives than most of us did when we were growing up, and I believe they need a lot of support from both the school and their home. One new “challenge” our students are facing is the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test their Junior year. This is a state designed test that includes Science as well as English, Math and History. This test focuses more on knowledge of subject material than the previous "skills" tests. Students must pass this test to graduate.
I give each student a copy of the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for Biology the first week of school. This is the biology material that I am responsible for teaching and the student is responsible for knowing for the TAKS test. Physics and Chemistry are also included on this test, but students will receive that information in the next two years. My concern is the retention of the Biology information they receive this year through their Junior year.
TAKS review questions are provided throughout the year for all students, and my tests are designed in TAKS format to allow the students to familiarize themselves with the types of questions that will be asked on the actual TAKS test. However, it is vital that each student study the material from class at home on their own on a daily basis. Just reading over the days lessons or notes two or three times in the evening will make a remarkable difference in their retention abilities. Please encourage your child to take this seriously, pay attention in class and study at home throughout the school year. Homework or not, there is no reason your child should not have science work to look at every evening. I would like to see every student pass my class as well as this test on the first attempt. Again, a passing grade is needed to graduate.

Michelle Ecord
