La Porte ISD students, staff, and community members live healthy and productive lives as the result of increased awareness for components of healthy living and access to health care resources.
The LPISD School Health Advisory Council strives to improve student and staff performance by promoting age-appropriate wellness programs and healthy, balanced, and active lifestyles.
TDSHS 2010 Award for Excellence in Texas School Health: The La Porte ISD SHAC was awarded $1,200 and is using the money to start the Lean, Mean and Screened program which provides low cost EKG screening to LPISD student athletes.
The TEA 2010 Characteristics of an Effective SHAC Competitive Grant: This grant was awarded to the La Porte ISD SHAC. The money is being used to implement the Choosing the Best Way sex education curriculum at Baker 6th Grade Campus.
The TEA 2009 Leadership for Healthy Communities Award: A $2,000 award was given to the La Porte ISD SHAC which was used to underwrite costs for the Lean Lions FITTness afterschool club at LXE.
SHAC Guide for Texas School Districts
The School Health Program of the Department of State Health Services produced this helpful School Health Advisory Councils Guide for Texas School Districts for help to get started while building a successful SHAC.
