Air Pollution Safety Guidelines
Air pollution (Ozone) levels will be monitored using standards set by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC). Ozone is a gaseous pollutant created in the atmosphere by the action of sunlight on volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides. While certain amounts of Ozone exist in the atmosphere at all times excessive amounts have been proven to be unhealthy to all groups and especially dangerous to those who suffer from respiratory conditions such as Asthma.
Guidelines
Ozone monitoring will be done by accessing data transmitted to the Internet from one of the nearby TNRCC air quality monitoring stations listed below:
These links will take you to data collected from neighboring air pollution monitoring stations in Seabrook and Deer Park. You must take into account that information on this web site is posted on a one-hour delay basis. The time may arise when instructors will be notified by the Athletic Trainer or designee to stop all outdoor activity as new Ozone numbers are released.
When accessing the TNRCC web site use the Ozone level posted closest to the real time of your activity to establish you schedule. Based on the TNRCC guidelines use the following parameters:
- Green or Yellow: Safe level, no outdoor restrictions
- Orange: Ozone levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, use caution and limit prolonged outdoor exertion
- Red or Purple: Ozone levels are considered extremely unhealthy, no outside activities
